Intro to Linux and Vim

The Intro to Linux and Vim is modeled based on NCI’s NCI Starter Pack.

If you’ve never used a Command Line Interface (CLI) before, you might be wondering how on earth you’re going to perform work on a supercomputer, which traditionally uses a CLI to navigate and use the supercomputer. The following self-paced courses will help you to gain confidence in navigating the CLI, and also teach you how to use Vim to edit text files using a CLI. Let’s get started to figure out how to navigate the CLI!

  • Introduction to the Unix Shell

    ⏱️ 7 hours

The course content is available through external resources.

    Prerequisites: None

Learn core Unix shell commands to navigate files, automate tasks, and run tools on research systems. Essential for reproducible digital research and HPC workflows.

Use of the shell is fundamental to a wide range of advanced computing tasks, including high-performance computing. These lessons will introduce you to this powerful tool.

The Software Carpentry resource is great for self-paced learning too.
